Colleen Castillo

Dr. Colleen Castillo is a world-celebrated educator and teacher-trainer who has dedicated her life to helping international students learn English both at home and abroad. She has conducted seminars in several countries including Korea, Japan, Australia, and Mexico. She also taught at a university in Habikino, Osaka, Japan for two years where she learned as much as she could about Japanese language and culture.
Dr. Castillo enjoys traveling and likes to experience the culture of new places. She studies the languages and customs and tries to interact with as many people as possible.
Although Dr. Castillo speaks several languages, she often finds herself in places where she doesn’t know the language. When asked how she communicates with the people, she replied, “A smile is understood in any language!”

1 Theater in Japan– Noh and Kabuki
Join Dr. Castillo as she delves into the worlds of Noh and Kabuki in Japanese theater. When did the two theatrical styles develop, and how are they similar and/or different?
2 Art in Japan–Ukiyo-e Sumi-e
Today Dr. Castillo will discuss the works of Kitagawa Utamaro, Katsushika Hokusai, and others who used the ukiyo-e (woodblock) or sumi-e (ink picture) genres of art. Look at the processes and the end products of each genre.
3 Myths, Folktales, and Legends of Japan
What do the stories of a country teach us about the culture? Enjoy some of the more traditional stories of Japan as Dr. Castillo gives you examples of all three genres and you can decide.
4 The Shogun and the Samurai
Who were they and what was their relationship to each other? Today, Dr. Castillo will take you back to the medieval period of Japanese history and talk about the some of the main figures of that time.
5 Yokai: The Mysterious Creatures of Japan
The Boogie Man, the Leprechaun, and the Yokai. Things that go bump in the night or move by themselves. All cultures have their mysterious creatures, and Japan has many: some benevolent and others not. Come learn about a few of them with Dr. Castillo today.
6 Welcome to Busan, Korea
From temples to beaches, fish markets to spas, Busan offers many opportunities for international visitors to relax and enjoy the wonderful sights, sounds, and tastes of Korea. Join Dr. Castillo as she takes you on a virtual tour of the city of Busan.
7 UNESCO Cultural Sites of Japan
Have you heard of Kyoto, Nara, or Kamakura? The “Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil” monkeys? Dr. Castillo would like to introduce you to each of these cultural sites in Japan as well as others that are not as well-known.
