Clive Mayhew

Destination Maritime and Horticultural History

As an experienced cruise ship public speaker Clive has presented in many venues in London, Hong Kong, Europe and the United States.  Having travelled extensively in Europe over many decades he brings great knowledge and an infectious passion to all his talks.  Clive has always been fascinated by the countries and islands within the Mediterranean, sitting as they do in the cradle of western civilisation.  Through his talks Clive will share that fascination with us as we sail through these ancient seas.  He has presented in many venues including: The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in London, Hong Kong and the United States.

Mediterranean and Maritime

  1. Sailing the Ancient Aegean & The World’s Greatest Archaeological Treasure: People have sailed these seas for thousands of years.  Through war, trade and storytelling it fashioned the ancient civilisations around it.  This talk traces that history, taking in many of the destinations on this voyage.  It also reveals some of the ancient secrets long hidden below the waves – including one of the most astonishing ancient treasures ever found.
  2. The Mediterranean Sea – Two thousand years of conflict: The Mediterranean Sea has cradled world civilisation, but for centuries has also been a theatre of naval conflict. This talk follows that story from the ancient galleys of Rome, through battles in the golden age of sail, and up to the Malta’s gallant stand in WW2.
  3. The Titanic and her Sisters: The Titanic’s tragic fate is well known, but what of her two sister ships?  Their fortunes were very different, but they all have links to the Mediterranean waters we are cruising through today.
  4. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: The famous seven wonders of the ancient world had the Mediterranean Sea at their heart.  This talk visits those legendary sites, imagines their original glory, and reflects on what is left of these magnificent wonders today.
  5. Lord Nelson, Lady Hamilton and the Naples Affair: Nelson was Britain’s naval hero at the height of his fame, and Emma Hamilton was the most beautiful woman of her age.  Their meeting in Naples led to a passionate affair that scandalised Europe, and wrecked both their reputations.

  • Nelson is Britain’s most famous admiral, but in Naples he and Emma Hamilton became embroiled in an infamous affair that scandalised ‘polite’ society across Europe.

The world’s greatest archaeological treasure

  • Some suggest the pyramids, others the mask of Tutankhamun. For many the title goes to a remarkable bronze artefact discovered by Greek divers in 1900, but which took another 70 years to decipher. This talk unravels that mystery.
